Hero in Progress

The Suit Doesn’t Make the Hero

SuperMell stands in a sunlit bedroom wearing a smart business casual outfit, thoughtfully adjusting a shirt cuff while looking toward the morning light. Behind her, an open wardrobe symbolizes life’s transition, displaying everyday clothes, a growing collection of business attire, and her signature black superhero suit with purple gloves, belt, cape, and a broad wing-shaped purple “M” across the chest. On a nearby chair rest the superhero accessories, while books on Lean Six Sigma, QuickBooks Online, and a mission planning notebook represent the skills she’s been developing for her new career. Sticky notes reading “August 10,” “New chapter. New role. Same hero.” and “Thanks, Mom!” reinforce the theme of hope and preparation. At her feet, Diana—a mostly black cat with golden eyes and a distinctive white heart-shaped tuft on her chest—sits proudly inside a shopping bag, reminding us that every bag belongs to the cat. The image symbolizes the idea that confidence comes from personal growth and preparation, not from the clothes we wear.

An Unexpected Email

People often say, “The clothes make the person.” Superheroes have their own version of that idea. Batman has the cape. Superman has the famous “S.” Spider-Man has the mask. Their costumes help us recognize them… But none of them became heroes because of what they wore.

Today I received an email that made me smile. I’d been approved for a $150 clothing allowance through my job coaching company to help me prepare for my new job.

This isn’t about the job offer, which I have my official start date now of August 10th. This is about turning the page to begin a new chapter in my life. Not long ago, I wrote The Future Just Knocked, when this opportunity still felt like a hopeful possibility. Now that future is becoming reality.

It’s just a clothing allowance. But somehow… It feels like another piece of the future quietly falling into place.

More Than New Clothes

It feels like I’m about to embark on a new adventure. A new chapter in the Life of Mell. For the first time in quite a while, I’m genuinely excited about what’s next.

I’ve spent the last week learning QuickBooks through LinkedIn Learning and reviewing Lean Six Sigma concepts that might help me succeed in this new role. That preparation became the focus of my recent post, Training Montage, where I documented all the quiet work happening before my first day.

What’s left?

The dress code. The dress code is business casual. Do I have enough clothes to make this a reality?

After looking through my closet and finding not much I would consider to be business casual, I raided my mom’s closet for possible options. I was already starting to picture myself in a new style. It’s like I’ll be getting a new, fancy costume upgrade. I feel the same genuine excitement about this as I’m sure Peter Parker felt when Iron Man gave him his first tech-suit.

There’s so much more I could get, particularly in the pants department, or maybe some comfortable dress shoes — if such a thing exists — if I feel like wearing a skirt. It’s weird that I’m considering wearing skirts these days, or even dresses for that matter. I haven’t really worn this style in a long time. But for some reason I’m feeling drawn to it now. Is this a chance to reinvent myself?

I haven’t even gone shopping yet. I looked online to send some examples of styles I was looking for to my job coach for the funding approval. Suddenly I found myself looking for my style, for maybe the first time in my life.

I want my clothes to be comfortable, but fashionable. I don’t want to be too hot or wear something that doesn’t quite feel like it’s me. But I want to change things up a bit. I want my clothes to reflect the confidence I’ve been rebuilding.

Dressing for a New Chapter

As excited as I am about a shopping spree still to be determined, I’m equally excited to start the new role.

I will be a Customer Success Manager. Basically, I’ll be the voice of the customer, and ensure that they are kept in the loop on the progress of their print orders, from concept to delivery. I’m genuinely excited about all the possibilities this role may present.

I’m beginning to imagine that first day of work. What it will feel like getting up, getting ready, eating breakfast, making a lunch, and heading out the door to a new horizon. I have a rather vivid imagination as it is, so of course I would be wondering what I would be wearing.

The clothes don’t exist yet. But the anticipation does.

The Hero Was Already There

The clothing allowance isn’t what’s changing me. Neither are the shirts or the shoes.

The real transformation happened long before that. It happened every time I chose preparation over procrastination. Every course completed. Recharging every routine. Every small promise I kept to myself.

I mentioned all I did to prepare in my last post on the training montage. I’ve also been rebuilding routines. There’s a newfound optimism that I haven’t felt in a very long time. Lady Optimism would probably be smiling about all of this. After over three years of feeling uncertain about what’s going to happen to me, I now feel hopeful.

All that preparation has helped make the hero stronger. Looking back, I don’t think any of this would have happened if I hadn’t first decided to Go Anyway, even when I wasn’t sure where the path would lead.

The clothes simply help tell the next chapter.

Looking at the Closet

My closet is in an interesting state right now. Some clothes are from my past. Some were kindly passed along by my mom for this new chapter. Others haven’t even been purchased yet.

I’ll be spending some time this weekend planning what I’ll be wearing. What combinations would look good? What do I still need? That will help me figure out what to spend that money on.

Looking at it, I have come to a realization… My wardrobe is in transition because my life is too.

Diana’s Fashion Philosophy

No one knows how to be a fashionista as well as a cat.

Diana believes every outfit should be clean and shiny, much like her gorgeous black fur.

She also assumes every shopping bag automatically belongs to her, regardless of what is inside it.

She hasn’t seen the new clothes yet, but I’m fairly certain she’ll inspect every bag before I do.

The Waiting Feels Different

For the past couple of weeks, I have been in a holding pattern. Waiting on confirmation, waiting for paperwork to be in. When will the start date be? So much waiting.

Now I’m counting down instead of counting the days.

While I’m still technically waiting, it’s a different feeling than before. It feels more hopeful. More optimistic. I catch myself smiling a lot these days.

Of course, I will state that there are starting day jitters starting to show itself. I think everyone has those first-day jitters. What stands out to me far more are all the possibilities this new chapter holds. More than ever, I’m ready to turn the page.

Final Thought: The Suit Doesn’t Make the Hero

Someday soon I’ll go shopping. I’ll probably spend too much time deciding between two nearly identical shirts. I’ll wonder if one colour looks more professional than another.

Eventually those clothes will hang in my closet, waiting for their first day. But when that morning finally arrives… I’ll remember something important.

The suit doesn’t make the hero. It never did.

The wardrobe is catching up to the person I’ve already become.

The next time I put on a business casual shirt, it won’t just be another outfit. It will be a reminder that hope sometimes arrives one ordinary detail at a time.

What ordinary moment has quietly reminded you that a new chapter is getting closer?
